A Healthier You
| Hand Washing | Improved adherence to hand hygiene (i.e. hand washing or use of alcohol-based hand rubs) has been shown to terminate outbreaks in health care facilities, to reduce transmission of antimicrobial resistant organisms (e.g. methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) and reduce overall infection rates. |
| Physical Fitness | Breaking out of a sedentary lifestyle and making exercise a regular part of your life can have impressive benefits. It can increase the amount of blood your heart can pump, lower your heart rate when you are at rest, improve your cholesterol level, lower your blood pressure and reduce body fat. Regular exercise also can help you mentally by making it easier to manage stress, leaving you more energetic, making daily chores easier to accomplish, helping you sleep better and improving your self-image. The best part about these benefits is that they are accessible, to some degree, to almost any individual who builds exercise into his or her daily routine. |
| Food Handling | Despite the fact that the United States has the safest food supply in the world, it is not invincible. In Illinois, it is estimated that as many as 250,000 cases of foodborne illness may occur each year. However, because these illnesses can be quite mild and because the vast majority of them occur in the home, many go unreported. Yet, foodborne illnesses can lead to serious complications and even death. Therefore, how you handle food in your home can mean the difference between health and illness. |
| Health Promotion | Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious foods, being physically active, and avoiding tobacco can prevent or control the devastating effects of many diseases. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is committed to programs that reduce the health and economic consequences of the leading causes of death and disability and ensure a long, productive, healthy life for all people. |
| Immunizations | On this website you will find immunization information about vaccine preventable diseases, the benefits of immunization, and the risks of immunization versus the risk of disease, as well as educational materials and resources. |
