Private Sewage

The purpose of this program is to reduce the possibility of health hazards created by malfunctioning or improperly constructed and maintained private sewage disposal systems.

The program regulates all private sewage disposal systems, which have no surface discharge, and those, which treat a flow of 1,500 gallons per day or less with a surface discharge.

Plans for the installation of private sewage disposal systems must be reviewed and approved prior to construction.  The health department enforces the Illinois Private Sewage Disposal Code under authority of the Private Disposal Licensing Act.  To print a copy of the sewage permit click here.

The Wayne County Health Department Division of Environmental Health permits and inspects approximately 80 systems per year. If you have any questions regarding Private On-Site Sewage Treatment Systems or receiving a permit, please contact our office at 618-842-5166, or call Bill Jay Bruce, Director of Environmental Health, at 618-516-1732.
